After seeing Zoë Kravitz’s modern rehearsal dinner look ahead of her June 2019 nuptials to Karl Glusman, we thought we had a pretty good idea of what the actress wore down the aisle. But now that she’s shared intimate photos from her wedding day, our predictions were completely wrong.
Turns out, Kravitz was more of a timeless bride than we thought, and she commissioned designer Alexander Wang to create her custom look. The sleeveless, drop-waist ballerina skirt design was inspired by Audrey Hepburn and was made with organza and microseed pearls.
“Zoë was very clear on her vision: something pure, elegant, timeless but with depth,’ Wang told Vogue. “She knew the reference she wanted and that was Audrey Hepburn. But we didn’t want it to feel vintage or too costumey.”
Wang worked on the dress for about a year and had five fittings with Kravitz. “I wanted it to be perfect, and each piece was made separately and fitted individually before we put it together,” he said per Vogue. Draped in five layers of bias organza, the gown was embellished in tiny pearls along the edged neckline and armholes to replace the need for jewelry. Although, Kravitz did skip tradition in one way—opting for a micro bow headband instead of a veil.
Since Wang and Kravitz have been dear friends for years, the wedding dress was not without sentimental touches from the designer himself, with Wang revealing he ‘made a special embroidered note for her on the inside. When it’s one of your best friends, it becomes such an honor to go through this process together.”
While Kravitz’s unexpected number wasn’t the first wedding gown Wang has created, he has yet to design a bridal look for someone he doesn’t know. “I don’t usually do wedding dresses unless I really know the person, because it’s a personal and intimate process,” he explained. Still, a bridal collection from the fashion icon is a future possibility. “I don’t think I could just design wedding gowns for people I don’t know. I’ve done about six of them now and each process has been so unique to the person. But never say never!” Perhaps a line inspired by the custom looks he created for some of his dear friends would be a good place to start!
The series of black and white photos both Kravitz and her husband shared on Instagram also painted a pretty solid picture of exactly how the couple’s wedding day went down. During the ceremony, Kravitz descended a staircase to a waiting Glusman as guests stood in the venue’s foyer. Afterward, everyone moved outside to dine al fresco. The bride even took time to pose with her Big Little Lies costars Shailene Woodley, Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern and Reese Witherspoon.
Following the reception, guests went back inside the venue for an after-party. Here, Kravitz changed into a second look—a fitted, strapless top and matching low-rise skirt.
Now we’re just left wishing we could rewind to last June and relive Kravitz’s Parisian ‘I do’s.’ But since that’s not possible, we’ll just be waiting for Wang to make his debut on a Bridal Fashion Week runway.
